Where did everything start?
It all started with the evolution of OpenAI which subsequently led to significant changes worldwide. Founded in 2015 by a group of entrepreneurs and researchers including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI set out with a mission to shape the future of AI and its potential applications in reshaping human life.
The basic role of OpenAI is to study super intelligence and invent smart things that would be useful. There was various language processing models generated by OpenAI but none of them were advanced or popular. It was Chatgpt that shook the world and brought open AI to the next level. It was introduced in 2018 as a basic text generator.
Evolution of Sora:
There were various other text-to-video AI tools that were discovered before Sora but they all lacked quality. For example, the video of Will Smith eating spaghetti and meatballs went viral in March 2023 which was created using an AI tool known as ModelScope. The problem it faced was a lack of video quality. The same video was generated by the latest AI technology and people were stunned by the quality it had.
This highlights the big improvements in AI video generation since then.OpenAI's recent invention, Sora has stunned the AI community. Different from their existing language models, Sora focuses on text prompts for video generation. Users provide a text prompt, and Sora generates short videos up to 60 seconds in length. Additionally, users can input still images, which Sora brings to life based on provided instructions. OpenAI announced Sora on Feb 15 but hasn't yet released it to the public. They are allowing artists and hackers to try it out to assess its potential benefits and possible risks.
OpenAI claims to have used licensed and publicly available video content for Sora's model training. However, OpenAI has not disclosed much information about Sora's development or training process. It is also important to note that the generated videos have no sound.
What are the use cases behind Sora?
Sora can be used to create videos from scratch or extend an existing video to make them longer. It can also fill in the missing frames from videos.
It can be used as a powerful weapon for content creation in social media. Content that would be difficult for the users to create. For example, a post titled how people of Lagos, Nigeria would look in 2056 could be created for a social media post easily with the help of Sora.
Sora can be used to implement quick ideas in a video format which can make it to represent more understandably. If an individual has any idea of a business and wants to reach the audience then Sora can be a way to do that.
Another major usage of Sora can be in the film industry. It can be used by the directors to quickly implement an idea in a video format and check whether it works well or not. They can see how the scene looks on screen before actually committing the budget in real life. Filmmakers can use the short videos created by Sora for marketing purposes which can be done easily without spending any money.
Will Sora replace video production?
The major reason why Sora is booming is because it can understand how the real world works according to the laws of physics. People are in doubt whether the evolution of Sora can replace jobs. Various statements support that there can be job losses. During a film shoot, there won't be any requirement to take the camera with a team of persons and shoot the entire scene as it can be done easily by using Sora.
There won't be any requirement for a studio. There are chances that the marketing and advertising sector would be affected by this. But OpenAI has clearly stated that sometimes these AI-generated videos can fail to apply the physics of the real world and even some minor defects in the video have also come into notice by seeing which we can tell that the video is AI-generated.
In the future, after improving the model it would be difficult to differentiate an AI-generated video from real ones. This can lead to a rapid increase in fake news. This is a major reason why it is not released to the public.
Some fraud companies can generate fake videos of a celebrity promoting their brand. But as a solution to this problem, OpenAI has said that a watermark would be added to all the videos generated by Sora.
Conclusion
To sum up, as we look forward to the arrival of Sora, it's clear it could be just as groundbreaking as ChatGPT. But don't worry about losing your job because of it. History shows us that when technology advances, new jobs come along too.
Think about our parents' generation. When technology changed, they didn't lose jobs; they just did different ones that were often easier. The same will happen with Sora. Sure, some jobs might disappear, but new ones will pop up.
If you're willing to learn new things, you'll be fine. But if you refuse to adapt, you might get left behind. So, instead of fearing technology, see it as a chance to grow.
The media should also focus on the good things about AI, not just the bad. And remember, AI won't replace us; it'll help us do our jobs better.
So, as Sora gets closer to becoming a reality, let's embrace the change and keep learning. That's how we'll succeed in this new era of technology.
